Veneers Q & A
What are veneers?
Veneers are thin porcelain shells bonded to your permanent teeth. They mask imperfections like stains, discoloration, and visible gaps or spaces. Porcelain is incredibly tough and durable. It mimics the color and light-reflecting properties of tooth enamel.
What types of problems can veneers correct?
The team at ViVE Dental uses veneers to correct various oral imperfection, including:
- Discolored and stained teeth
- Worn or damaged teeth
- Unusually shaped teeth
- Pointy teeth
- Gaps and spaces between teeth
You might also benefit from veneers if your teeth are somewhat crooked or misaligned.
Who can benefit from veneers?
Anyone who is unhappy with the color or appearance of their teeth can benefit from veneers. This is especially true if your teeth don’t respond to traditional whitening treatments or they have an abnormal appearance.
Prior to developing a treatment plan, the team conducts an oral exam, reviews your dental health history, and takes oral X-rays. If you have cavities or gum disease, the team addresses these issues before moving forward.
What does getting veneers involve?
If the team determines you’re a good candidate for veneers, they prepare your teeth by removing a thin layer of enamel from each tooth. They then take digital impressions with the iTero® 5D intraoral scanner. Afterward, they send your impressions to a dental laboratory that manufactures your set of custom veneers.
A week or two later, you return to ViVE Dental. The team lines up the veneers with your teeth and bonds them in place. They then trim any excess material, polish your teeth, and provide you with care instructions.
How long do veneers last?
Veneers typically last 10-15 years, but they can last even longer if you take good care of them. To prevent damage or stains to your veneers, ViVE Dental recommends brushing twice a day, flossing regularly, and visiting the office twice a year for an oral exam and professional cleaning.
To prevent chips, cracks, or other damage, avoid bad habits like nail-biting, chewing on ice cubes, or opening objects with your teeth.
