Sleep Apnea Q & A
What is sleep apnea?
Sleep apnea is a potentially serious condition that causes you to stop breathing multiple times during sleep.
There are several types of sleep apnea, including central sleep apnea, obstructive sleep apnea, and complex sleep apnea. No matter the type, it’s important to seek treatment. Early intervention can preserve your health and allow for a more restful and rejuvenating sleep.
What are the symptoms of sleep apnea?
Common symptoms of sleep apnea include:
- Loud snoring
- Gasping for air during sleep
- Morning headaches
- Waking up with a dry mouth
- Difficulty staying asleep
- Irritability
If you have sleep apnea, you might also find it difficult to pay attention or stay alert throughout the workday.
Who is at risk of sleep apnea?
Sleep apnea affects people of all ages and races, but several factors may increase your risk, including being overweight, being a man, or being middle-aged or older. Other risk factors for sleep apnea include smoking, using alcohol, and having a family history of the condition.
If your partner regularly complains of your snoring, or you wake up more than two times a week feeling groggy or unrested, contact the team at ViVE Dental right away.
How is sleep apnea diagnosed?
To diagnose sleep apnea, the team at ViVE Dental conducts an oral exam, reviews your dental health history, and asks about your symptoms and lifestyle. They then assess your teeth for signs of grinding (bruxism), which is often associated with sleep apnea.
If these measures aren’t enough to make a diagnosis, the team might refer you to a sleep specialist. A sleep specialist can prescribe an overnight study that monitors your breathing patterns while you sleep.
How is sleep apnea treated?
Sleep apnea was traditionally treated with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). However, CPAP is bulky and prevents you from sleeping in certain positions. To allow for a more comfortable, restful night of sleep, the team at ViVE Dental recommends custom oral appliances.
A custom oral appliance is a plastic mouthpiece that pushes your lower jaw slightly forward. This opens your airway, allowing you to breathe clearly. Custom oral appliances are small, comfortable, and discreet. You can sleep in any position, including on your back or side.
